Why Write a Blog and How to Start?
Some say writing is therapeutic, opening a window into one’s soul. Others say writing is a part of one’s identity—they simply cannot not write. I say writing reveals who I am; I write to discover my true self.
Today, I was asked to offer one tip for someone who wants to start a blog. I’ll share not just one tip but two essential pointers. While there are countless guidelines and perspectives to explore in blog writing, these two "must-dos" will help kickstart the process.
1. Start Writing and Observe Your Progress
Begin by writing consistently, even if it's just in the form of a private journal.
Track your progress and notice how your writing improves over time.
Pay attention to the topics you feel most drawn to—they can reveal your authentic voice and interests.
Expressing your authentic voice can make you feel vulnerable. You may expose your point of view, fears, and aspirations to others. This vulnerability might invite criticism or opposition, but authenticity requires courage. Embrace this process, as it is essential for connecting with your audience.
Decide when you feel ready to share your writing through a blog post.
Choose a platform that aligns with your goals and preferences.
2. Ask Yourself Why You Want to Keep a Blog
Define your purpose and set a clear goal for your blog.
Depending on your purpose, revisit the first step to tailor your writing towards achieving that goal.
My Blogging Journey
I have been blogging on and off for over 10 years. Initially, my purpose was to promote my non-fiction book and establish a social media presence as a public speaker. However, as time passed, my goals evolved. In 2024/2025, my reasons for blogging have shifted. It’s no longer about publicity or promoting services. Here’s why I now prioritize writing a personal blog:
Why Launch a Personal Blog Website?
1. Self-Expression
A personal blog is a powerful way to express myself and share my unique perspective with a general audience.
It provides a platform to write about topics I’m passionate about and engage with like-minded individuals who resonate with my thoughts and ideas.
It serves as an archive for all my recent writing, keeping my progress in one place, and making it easy to reflect on and revisit.
2. Self-Growth and Learning
Writing a personal blog helps me grow as a person. Reflecting on my thoughts and experiences, and sharing them with others, allows me to gain new insights and perspectives.
As I work on completing my PhD on minimalism and human flourishing, blogging has become an invaluable tool. Over the past three years, I’ve read over 60 books and 200 journal articles on research methods, philosophy, voluntary simplicity, minimalism, and human flourishing. Reflective writing helps me synthesize these ideas and connect them meaningfully.
3. Promoting Minimalism as a Sustainable Way of Life
Through my research on urban minimalism and human flourishing, I’ve realized how many people are curious about this alternative way of life. Blogging enables me to share insights, encourage creativity, and inspire others to embrace sustainable living.
Final Thoughts
Blogging is a journey of self-expression, self-discovery, and growth. Whether you’re writing to share your passions, refine your ideas, or inspire others, the act of writing itself can be deeply fulfilling. If you’re considering starting a blog, remember:
start small,
reflect often,
always stay true to your purpose.
Your unique voice is worth sharing with the world.
